I tend to joke when I'm drowning
and welcome the work of the water.
I'm the daughter
you never taught to swim.
I make comedy of salt sting,
and I grin -
moss in my teeth.

'welcome the work of the water' has wonderful rhythm. I do adore your amazing anti-heroes of poetry.
love, love this. wicked awesome, as we say :)
Wicked way, with wondrous words whaling within!
What caught my eye (and my breath) was the first line, the 'I tend to joke when I'm drowning'... That one will stick with me. Well done!
Brilliant poem. Sad, but it touches my anger too. I knew someone like this once upon time. She took her own life eventually, but not by drowning. That was too everyday.
Yes, the first line caught me, too!! Terrific as always, MZ!
love the 'daughter' and 'taught her' combo.
You left out the 'waving' [or not?].
Well done baking something tasty out of these ingredients.
The jester's grin looks so eery...~ Blessings!
Hiding hurt and pain behind the jester's smile .. deep as the Seas your poem.
"Now it's just another show/ it's leave 'em laughing when you go"
Wonderful words...I like to think you wrote about me.
So perfect! "I welcome the work of the water" and the moss in her teeth - brilliant.
This has a bit of dark humor...I can't decide if she is grinning as she drowns or she taught herself to swim and smugly chews moss as a snub to her mother. Either way..I love it!
you are indeed the Mama Zen of ironical darkness right through the moss in your teeth, always amazing
Perhaps better moss in teeth than moss ON teeth-- always cool and more than that. K.
very cool, MZ ~
