Dusky deep in the trumpet vine,
your dusty bare feet next to mine;
you gave me a necklace made of fishing line
and feathers from your favorite lure.
I almost kissed you then and there,
but I was just old enough to be a little scared.
To this day, I wish I'd dared -
it was so pure,
and we were
best friends.

Such a perfect time. Would the kiss have ruined the memory or made it sweeter?
Kerry said it before I could. But I, too, wonder if the kiss would have lessened the power of the memory... and kill the poem.
Love the sweetness of the tone and rhythm. ♥
Hells bells, I kissed all my best friends till I was about ten. We held hands, skipped, hugged, bathed together and talked about life. Thank GOD there was no bullshit about Cis-this or Trans-that. Many of us were tomboys and none of us grew up to want to have fake penises or be injected with male hormones. It's 1,000% child abuse to inject a CHILD with hormones. Really, this generation is so fucked up, it makes me happy to be so far away from it in my own world. Let a child grow up, THEN CHOOSE whether or not they're gay or whatever as informed ADULTS.
Perfect poem, MZ.
MZ--Yeah, I wonder, too, if the kiss would have mucked things up... There's a Carly Simon song ("It Was So Easy" or "I Remember a Time" on the "No Secrets" album) that talked about childhood things which is sweet and full of innocence, like this.
I love the dusky and the dusty. Love it ALL (of course).
A poignant moment very well expressed. I remember times I wished I had been bolder and times when I wish I held back.
Yes, I agree it is poignant - and a bit of envy - I don't think I've had a best friend like that.
That is so special. Your poem caused me to want to cry...more than the rest of the video/lyrics etc. you have such a way of honing down to poignant imagery and emotion. Love it MZ!
No purer, no cleaner picture from childhood than stanza 1. Brilliant.
Those gaps at the end are very telling. They make me want to know exactlly what went down to make you insert that "were" and then line-break it so hard.
"and feathers from your favorite lure."
Very clever.
Also, I think you're suggesting that the two began trying to "best" one another, which inevitably damaged their relationship.
Aw!
Such sweet memories.....
Regret about missed opportunities are universal, but that necklace is just as charming!
Looking back through the process of growing up tempered with all of its innocence. Nothing untoward happened. All friendships were sincerely extended!

yeah for sure "i wonder ifs" are too, the stuff of memories
much love...
Oh I love this...I also wrote of a missed kiss. It seems most of us hold one in our memories.
