When you write my history, judge me
like I'm Jefferson or Joan of Arc.
Weigh the truths I declared against the mistress I didn't.
Balance sanity on the edge of a blade.
Am I found wanting?
Less a saint?
Put it in the footnotes.
No one reads them anyway.

This whole thing is clever, especially the ending.
Indeed, the footnotes is what make all the difference but who ever cared for those.
I'm having one of those beautiful over-sensitive mornings when unexpected truths move me to tears. This poem is really great for that!
Thank you.
haha Funny kid!

No one reads them anyway...I really enjoyed this.
ha. that is where the real story is found
most of the time...in te footnotes and margins
The ending DOES zing, and it's so true. Too many of us just read the figurative headlines, and never take the time to really dig...
Good place for it.
I love it and no one says it better, MZ!!
This poem has a cool bite to it. I especially love the closing lines - so true.
That ending is SO true! No one does.
This is so true. History is about judgement by people who were not there, and did not walk a step in the other man's shoes... Here's to unread footnotes, and minding one's own business.
Very clever, lady!
I love this one! Be you and screw the notes of the business bodies' foot! Cheers~
I'll read those footnotes, Mom Z. Especially the ones you have written. (Reminds me of a story about one of my students--his "typist" left his footnote out. Then it went from there, he learned a lot in the/my process.)
..
Oh this was just forthcoming, lol. I liked your poem and the change of mood it gave me after commenting on all others before. I enjoyed it, thanks!
Damn the footnotes...live life the way you wish..great poem!!
This is kick ass. Sorry. I don't usually swear. But this is just so clever. Adore it.
witty close.. :)
Hope you will have time today to respond to the NINE people from Poets United Poetry Pantry who took time to respond to your poem.
Mary, since you chose to address this publicly in my comments, I will respond publicly as well.
For years, I have blogged and commented with the utmost attention to reciprocity. At this time, however, I am only living in my own home with access to my own computer 2 days out of the week. The other five days, I am a full time, 24 hour a day caregiver for my dying mother. Give me a break, or feel free not to visit.
I am sorry, Kelly, as I understand firsthand what you are going through. I was the full-time caregiver for my partner who was dying; and it was not easy. However, how were we at Poetry Pantry to realize that you were going through this? How would we know you would be sharing your poem and hoping for comments but not reciprocating? Perhaps you should have let us know in the 'comments' under Pantry so we could have known. Then we would have known you were only sharing your poem and would not have expected anything in return and would have been more sympathetic to what you were going through. Again, I do know that the caregiver's role is a difficult one; and I am sorry, from firsthand experience, what you are going through.
