Small and fine
we grind the days.
The best, the worst of everything
all fodder for a deepening
love, true and persistent.
And when darkness brings its gentle weight
(creaking these old mattress springs),
mouth to mouth and thigh to thigh
small and fine
we grind the night.

I love it!! And the comments above say it all!! You've made my day, MZ!! The neighbors walking past my apartment are looking through my window with raised eyebrows!!
small and fine, we grind, we grind. fine grind
Ah.. that is so beautifully expressed.
"we grind....the best, the worst of everything....." How wonderfully expressed.
I think you make me wish for night... :-)
This is so cool, how you came up with the perfect phrase to work from and express the different meanings. It's gentle and lovely.
Lovely and cool !
This is lovely, MZ. k.
The only way to get the love one deserves, is to earn it, day by grinding day. Sublime, mz.
ooo, la, la 😉
A lot of work over here~!
Love this one~
Sweet and sexy simultaneously.
Sensual, beautiful
I think it was Jack Gilbert who said a marriage was the million small moments we can't remember -- that which we end up praising or grieving or both. Those filaments sum here so beautifully, MZ.
This poem touches me. Yes, we do grind the night....we all have to do this eventually, like it or not.
I have to admit I thought immediately of the Bible verse about the mills of god, but I like these mills much much better. As always, your writing doesn't say, it shows, and we are there in the moment with the narrator.
I was thinking coffee... which happens to be a code word between me and my gf that is, um, apropos :) ~
