How have I traveled
so many miles
never knowing that each
was five thousand two hundred eighty feet?
How can I have lived
forty-three years
and still think a meter
is that thing the gas company reads?
And, how can I help
my girl understand
ounces and grams
without revealing my frame of reference?
I had to cheat it a bit, but it's 55 words for MY G-Man. G-Man is hosting his last Friday Flash 55 today. Go on over and thank him for all he's done to keep the internet interesting.

,,ah.. The sad thing is, once they go to college they will understand. I know … I have them ranging from 21 - 6 years of age.
And I prefer the innocence :)
We use metres to measure and meters for the gas/electricity readings but I still feel like I have miles to go, and I never budge an inch.
;-)
OK...
A gram is about One Big Fat Joint
rolled with a double wide.
An ounce is about 28-30 Fatties!
Now do you understand?
MZ...I can rest easy knowing that I've left My Baby in very formidable hands. You have always been most gracious to me and my sharp tongued ways, and since I'm not really going anywhere, I'll still be my ascerbic self.
Thanks for being such a class act
have a Kick Ass Week-End
Ha! How indeed. My son was always delighted to explain his math homework to me, since I would just gape at it like a fish. Great 55, MZ.
my 13 year old nascent engineer derides the English system as archaic. it'll never change so long as a basepath is 90', pitcher's mound 60'6" from home plate, and a first down is 10 yards...
and welcome to your new co-perch, MZ ~
Everything I learned about math I learned from a fifth grader. That's no joke my son finally made math make sense.
Excited for your new role MZ - I think you would look great in a pope hat!
I used to read meters... gave me time to write. You know....one of those weird assorted jobs, like delivering newspapers and collecting recyclables. It's a pleasure to me in the company of writers, particularly you!
A pleasure to BE in the company of writers. We're like cooks in the kitchen: an eclectic bunch of interesting characters.
Clever 55. Y=Thanks for helping to keep 55 alive.
Laffin hard @ the ending!
But really, Poet, you don't know meter? *scoffs*
Heheh - Mama Z. you're telling me you're not a mathlete?
How could I forget to say congratulations and thank you!?!
Clever and great :)
Lovely riff on maths woes -I had the opposite, coming from 'metres' to inches and miles. I still don't know my weight in stones. (Probably best not to!)
Good questions indeed! So much of 'modern math' is confusing to those of us who learned it the old way. Great last 55 for Galen!
had to learn , quite a difference between 30Farenheit and 90 degrees Celcius..but hey I can tell when hot it hot and cold is cold, I don't see what else matters
