(Sh)Epitome
of all I'm not.
Beautifully balanced
as the Starbucks cup
in her right hand.
Lipstick in her left.
She puckers at the mirror.
Near her,
I wash my hands
and stand -
hair all mussed, face unfussed -
I just can't
try to fix myself in front of her;
(sh)epitome.

Haha! We do move over. And I pity her!

We've all been there ... 😱
Been there done that, and really who cares, except for your magnificent words
Oh, yes!!! Been there, done that, too!! This is terrific, MZ!! I love it!!
I have a certain admiration for women who take the trouble. Partly my grandmother's fault for telling me never to 'let myself go'.
I make myself presentable in the workplace, but certainly put in no effort after hours. (Sorry Gran)
:-)
I'm glad I don't go through that, M.Z. Your poet lady needs to stick a picture, "I could be ...", on her refrigerator.
..
Ha!!! I prefer the unkempt look. Do I appreciate the other, sure, but not sure why I prefer the natural look. Especially wet hair!!!!! Ok I said it...the pervert said it..lol. Loved this MZ
what soul sits beneath the unkempt hair... what soul sits behind the lipstick and Starbucks coffee... The mirror reflects more than the surface if you look beyond the obvious...
ha. nice wordplay up front...yeah, you know i have little use for gussying up...
Unkempt in a nice way is always more sexy. That is quite universal. Nicely MZ!

A wonderful capture of the common beauty ritual. A very smart and engaging write.

Well, there isn't much beautiful with my natural state… good thing my husband is practically blind without his glasses :)
I do like to carry a tube of lipstick around, and I do like Starbucks… but more times than not I use the drive through window as I'm in my "natural state" ;P
Clever words, as always. SHE vs she (loved that)
My mother used to say to my teenaged self, "You look like a ghost, go put some lipstick on!"
That was long before Starbucks, of course, circa late 1950s, early 1960s.
You, my dear MZ, are a poet in a million, carrying succinct to new, um, what? lows? No, not that can't be right.

It's not a dude thing except when trying to perform next to a more impeccable specimen at the urinal. The pecker parade. Gee whiz, dare I? It's one of the rare moments when the outside freight outweighs the inner ... guess that why it's an epitome ...
One never knows what insecurities may drive "perfect" women. Plus, I bet she can't write a poem for shit. That's what I like to tell myself in a situation like this, where I am feeling all less-than because of a stranger half my age. As they used to tell me at the tables, "don't compare your inside with someone else's outside."
Besides, you're the finest there is, MZ!
unkempt seems to be my middle name. we love you just the way you are.
Love this one.
Know this! Excellent!
