I shucked the place
and spread the silk
in search of something sacred.
All I found
was a faded space
where our picture might have been.
But there are things we kept secret
after we shed skins
and reason
still creaking beneath the floorboards
as if they wish
to walk again.

Secrets beneath the floor boards...wonderful thought. I'm sure there are many in every house/relationship.
This is extremely enigmatic, as any poem about secrets should be.
That first stanza is so gorgeously worded, and the poem as a whole is just stellar. I agree with Kerry.
'still creaking beneath the floorboards'..lets hope they remain there forever...mysterious
indeed....great lines
Yes, no matter how much quicklime you throw on those buried things, they never seem to go away. Evocative imagery, and as always, sharp, vital language.
a haunting poem Mama Zen... those things hidden are like ghosts and goblins...
Those last three lines--especially--are mind-blowing.
(Don't you EVER blow chunks when you write?)
haunting. the empty space...and the things still living under the floorboards....
Love that last verse of secrets under the floorboards wanting to walk again.
Who knows what the secret its -- cunningly enigmatic, as others have pointed out -- but the title somehow has the key. (Great job on that). And what is the emotional space of a secret? This.
Oo, I love that idea of secrets creeping beneath the floorboards.......
Hmm those secrets below the boards have a way of putting on new skin (at least in horror).
great images MZ
great poem, lovely the imagery.. and the things kept secret after shedding skin.
Under the floor boards is too close for comfort.
Just as a secret under the floorboards points at eeriness .. it stands as a contrast against the first part about a love lost.. good stuff.
Between your subtle rhyme and that incredible third stanza, this is a stunner.
I wonder at the secrets housed in the floorboards where I grew up...your piece carries secrets ears will never hear...love the mystery of it.
our memory keeps secrets triggered by sounds too...that creak...mystery
oOo...yes, those kinds of secrets...I just love the imagery you use with the floorboards and shedding skins. Excellent writing MZ!!
Wonderful images in this brilliant poem. I love it!
has quite the bite...as always Mama Zen
I love the sense of getting down to the corn kernels at the beginning of this MZ, and the shedding not of leaves but skins--so interesting--one can hear the secrets (and skins) rustling there like little mice through the sheaves. k.
Always inspiring when I stop by.

what is buried there, if we pull up the boards? not sure i want to know. maybe let's keep the secret.
Grim and full of squeaky secrets under the floor boards ~ Lovely write MZ ~
Many years ago, my sisters and I discovered a cache of cash under the floorboards of an abandoned cabin ... $15 in one dollar bills. We felt like millionaires.
