Before my first miracle of the morning,
I stretch and scratch my ass,
pour myself a cup of coffee,
and try to let my brain catch up to my feet.
And, I let the dogs out.
I feel my eyes, my nose, and my lips
to see which face of the moon I'm showing.
I check my weathervane heart
(still beating and blowing).
I let the dogs back in.
Then, and only then,
do I think of you.
The miracle is that I waited
that long minute or two.

You scratch your ass? Hard to imagine that, MZ.
Sometimes the small miracles are the best!
ha. yes that is a miracle...
checking the face to see which moon you are showing...and the weathervane of the heart...love those bits...
and laurie, what is wrong with a good scratch? smiles.
Nothing like a good scratch indeed :))! I love it -- as always, MZ!
A minute or two....that's progress! I love the every womanness of this, MZ.
I'm giggling by the first stanza ~ Smiles, ha ~ Good one MZ ~
From a cheeky view of banal routine to a cheeky miracle. Love it.
I love the snark of the opening line, and I love the face (phase) of the moon and the weathervane heart. But most of all, I love how you've shown how the extraordinary (love!) sits side by side with the ordinary things of everyday life.
Wow, I would say your dogs are QUICK....if all that took place and you waited only a minute or two. LOL, mine take perhaps 5 minutes outside. Smiles.
MZ, love it all, especially this:
"I feel my eyes, my nose, and my lips
to see what face of the moon I'm showing.
I check my weathervane heart
(still beating and blowing)."

You have been spying on me! Our mornings sound so similar! LOVE IT!
The opening line convinced me of your goddess status. The clever imagery and diction magnified it. Brava!

You're not at this age yet, but a good ass-scratching is quite satisfying when you get to be 50-something. (A good nap is right up there as well.)
A terrific combination of wit and artful self-awareness. Great job.
Sounds like good progress in living your life. I just heard a tape but poet David Whyte called What to Remember Upon Waking. It's about the opportunity in that short window of time in the morning before we start thinking.
Those morning routines can't be changed. Scratching, dogs and coffee sounds about right.
I like.
Chuckles! You made your start of the morning a ritual of wit and love. Yes, do the needful and then back to the loved one within the minute! Nicely MZ!

Ha... that type of awakening sounds quite down to earth... No blissful dawn or anything like that, but how it really feel.
MZ, so many smiles in this--brain catching up to feet, finding out what phase of the moon, that it took that long to think of you...loved the phrasing too, broken up by the dogs :-)
mmm I don't know, I mean you know scratching the ass before you sip the java, that's kinda sick one must have priorities... loved it, I want to write like you do I want the bad stuff to be sarcastic and really bad and cool instead of boring old mournfowl and self-pi-tying
Tee-hee, this made me laugh! And yet there is love and poetry in our most banal little everyday gestures, if only we know where to look for it.
dammit MZ. this is a cool f(lippin) write.
Dang, this is a fun one, with that little twist at the end that turns it into a love poem. I liked the "dogs" refrain--not unlike my life. The dogs kind of rule us, don't they?
This was fun to read. I am glad I stopped over. Oh and I like that weather vane heart wish I had wrote that line.
The humor in this is raucous. Waking in bits and pieces is not far from the truth. And scratching the posterior is superior! Thanks for this smile, Mama Zen.
You slip so deftly from the profane to the sacred to the dreamy.
Oy, iz you an artist!
Your opening line grabbed me. I think it was the thought of the "first" miracle as the day promises many more to follow.
