I have a fragment
of full moon
on a chain
and a breathless
beatitude
stained
berry black
on the small of my back -
otherwise, I'd just forget you.
I have a snippet
of verse
in my shoe
and a bottle tree
ready to bloom
between your house and mine.
It straddles the property line
where you end
and I begin -
just friends.

Just good friends.... where've I heard that before.
Great poem MZ
This goes deeply into the true spirit of the things we tell ourselves that we know aren't true, I think, and the language is gorgeous--the whole 'breathless beatitude' line is diamond sharp, and the ending image of the bottle-tree, that totem of what's been emptied and thrown away made to be a thing of curious beauty--well, let's just say, tomorrow will be another wig day for me.
No one says/writes it better, MZ!
Oh I like this "just friends" I wonder. B
This is one of the most beautiful love poems I have read in a very long time - authentic voice - human condition - All!
This is beautiful, Kelli. From the fragment of full moon on a chain to the bottle tree, it's just perfect.
". . . otherwise, I'd just forget you."
Yes, there are the tokens and the charms, but it's the roots of that bloomin' tree that cannot be denied. How hard this is! Lying is necessary until both the love and the lying become tiresome (or someone else becomes distracting).
smiles...cool verse...love the bottle tree...and its symbolism....the moon on a chain as well...just friends, surely....
awwww, i LOVE this. true love. not the just-friends kind.
Everyone hears what you say. Friends listen to
what you say. Best friends listen to what you
don't say.
Have a nice weekend and keep a song in your heart.
Lee.
.. just now I'm thinking it might be nice to have a berry black tattoo on my backside!
You see what all those lies caused?
wow, this speaks volumes.... ;d
I want a berry black tattoo and a new fence ;D
Love your take on this prompt!
Your ability to turn ordinary words into works of art amazes me.
Yes, I have heard 'just friends' before as well. Not so!
i love poems with moons and bottle trees in them like I love my very own beating heart. Excellent, colorful poem, MZ. xo
I am simply gobsmacked by all great talent out here in bloggerdom. I like to collect poems but honestly I can't keep up with all of you.
your imagery is always presented as a fresh concept, the idea of a scrap of full moon on a chain is awesome, lie or not.....viva la
oh, i love the imagery in this! a most wonderful response to the prompt, MZ!
♥
Love the details, gorgeous!
Love this and all the trinkets and small details...
and ugh the friendzone...purgatory
"just friends" - said so beautifully :-)
I love the veil of ambiguity not really hiding the smile of truth.
Reminds me of the song.... "Just Friends, Lovers No More..."
Long-suffering unrequited love. Yeah, it smells like crap, for sure. I've experienced it, too many times, but this still made me smile. Thanks, hon. Amy

Very beautiful. Your imagery is always riveting. I especially love the "beatitude stained berry black", and the bottle tree. Lovely.
Just BFF's. The dreaded phrase when one really likes the other a bit more... You nailed this age ol' lie.
If I were you, I would change the title to something dark, ominous, and painful, like "Berry Black." I think your last line would kick so hard if you hadn't already given it away in the title.
This is excellent, so many beautifully captured images. I love the language in this. These are my favorites:
"and a breathless beatitude stained berry black on the small of my back - otherwise, I'd just forget you"
"a bottle tree ready to bloom"
