Just beneath the skin of sleep,
I am bird bones fleshed and feathered.
I am stubborn, skyclad branches.
I am silence in full throat.
Just beneath the skin of sleep,
fruit embraces seed
and want mates true with need
and both
sides of the pillow cool my face.

Very nice interpretation. I especially like 'want mates true with need.'
Beautiful, MZ! One of your best!
So much happening beneath the sleeping skin.
That last line rocks!
When want and need are one, that is as good as it gets.
Thought-provoking!
You know you are on a roll, right? I read this over four times, and it just reads right. "Fruit embraces seed" is my favorite line, but the beauty of this poem is its succinct, cohesive whole.
I love this, MZ, especially "I am bird bones fleshed and feathered"...and the skyclad branches. Your closing lines are perfection.
I am silence in full throat...is the line that grabbed me first...and then that stanza with the fruit and seed...wow...nicely done MZ
I like the silence in full threat line a lot but the whole thing is magical. Great poem!
A lot of happenings when one is asleep. The sub-conscious harbor many secrets. Agreed! Nicely MZ!

A succinct set of paradoxes - tight and to the quick.
A firework, brilliant!
I like your opening lines best ~ Nice work here MZ ~
I like how these lines snap and then the cool pillow--settles everything back down. Well done!
exquisite!

Very nicely done!
Such sad and beautiful beauty...
This is very cool MZ. I really like the feel you matched up this particular painting, in particular I am bird bones, fleshed and feathered/I am stubborn, skyclad branches/I am silence in full throat
Not just killer lines and the images they present, but so well apt to the painting. Overall great read.
You know, I was going to use this one myself, but obviously chose otherwise. Maybe it's just me, but looking at this photo still, I can't get the show The Walking Dead out of my mind, don't know why I get that vibe, anyhow just thought I'd share that.
Beautiful and deep.
Lovely - and very evocative. (Very moreish, too!)
To say this is lovely somehow seems not enough, but I am out of words for what you are doing of late. (Hair as well.) The last line here is truly enigmatic as well as brilliant, and leaves the reader poised to wonder about which side of life, waking or sleeping is really real.
This is beautifully written: the bare bones of life in poetry. I love the image of fruit embracing seed beneath the skin as one sleeps.
Beautiful lines !!!
Yes, the poem is exquisite.
Silence in full throat is brilliant, nothing less.
I am kind of speechless after reading this...the photo touched you in a deep and unique way;)
I think the closing line means that you remove the pillow from under your head, flip it over, and smother your face with it ... trying to kill yourself or screaming into it. Or maybe your sleep is just restless, and you keep flipping it over trying to get comfortable and calm your mind.
Skin is a protection, a covering, layers ... you view sleep in the same way. Also, the "skin" on top of food is just a thin layer, so perhaps you're saying this is a very light sleep.
Regardless, in your dreams you are a bird. My first inclination is to think your flesh and feathers have been removed and you are only bones. But you would have used "de-" in this case. I think in your dreams, you become full bird whereas when you are awake you are stripped to bones. This is further illustrated by the fact that you say (paraphrased): "In sleep, I am ... I am ... I am ..."
"I am silence in full throat." ... Incredible.
"fruit embraces seed" is sexual and also represents a feeling of wholeness
"want mates true with need and both" sort of brings together your different selves
