Mary says the games are rigged;
barkers got
no skin in the game.
The teddy bears are stuffed
with dollar bills
fools threw away.
The carousel is a dead horse
beaten round
as the calliope plays.
But the bumper cars
oh the bumper cars!
are a beautiful bash to the brain.
A response to and/or inspired by Mary Karr's County Fair, a poem I love and relate to quite a bit. Written for Ellas's prompt at Real Toads.

I am beginning to understand how the country fair has an ethos all its own. I like this look at the seamier side.
Well, of course, I love it as always and I do relate to County Fairs from all those years back when -- but I won't go back that far!!!
Well done and oh, so true.
I, too love the darker venture you shared~ So, true and I can see carnies with old faded ink tattoos. Bravo, to reality!
Oh, I love it!
I loved your perspective here. You've always got a fantastic array of details, thanks!
Your tone in the closing is pitch-perfect, MZ!
Mary Karr, of Lit and Cherry?
What a cool poem resulted from that inspiration.
People who don't like your driving should stay off the sidewalk, I say.
No, now wait a minute. The last few lines make me wonder if this is something personal, but if it is, I can't figure the rest of it. And who is Mary? *is sort of lost*
There is no way to fake the bash of the bumper car. Hot reality!
I, too, touched on the dark side of the 115 year history of the WA State Fair, & used bumper cars to illustrate my points. Your dead carousel horses will hunt me now though; macabre yet fun, nice combo.
I love a good Freudian typo; those colored deceased horses may indeed "hunt" me, but I was typing "haunt".
Love it, the darker side of the fair. Thanks for sharing Mary Karr.
Kinda like why we still write poetry. Why we still love. Believe.
