In the birth of the day
is my hollow space for burning.
Coffee first, then words
wrung wet from the night.
My equinox.
My rocking chair.
My returning
to I am,
to giving a damn,
to life.

Yay! "My returning to I am...." Loved this.
well put!
ZQ
I'll raise my morning cup of coffee to that!
Ah, no one says it better, MZ!! Thanks for the lift for my day -- as always!! Have a great new week!!
Ha.
returning to I am
could be read a couple ways.
In the spiritual way, it plays funny
with give a damn. But in the end,
much of life is learning
what to give a damn
about.
Those middle five lines are TIGHT. Love this.
Perfect!
OMG I wish I'd written that! So perfect. And what a striking image: words wrung wet from the night.
Yes, above all...coffee comes first.
I read this 3 times as it burned itself upon my soul...My returning, the birth of my day...all memorable lines!
I dig the whole piece - but this is wisdom "Coffee first, then words"
words wrung wet from the night.. wow!
A country singer (Jodee Messina? Martina McBride?) sang a song called "My Give a Damn's Busted." This piece is beautiful in its simplicity.
"My returning / to I am,"....Nice :)
Thank heavens for that hollow space and the magic it allows
That's a great morning call. That's just what waking up is like.
the equinox, sometimes it comes to me in the middle of the night
beautiful
gracias
sometimes it's hard to just get up and continue..
Well written. I agree with X the "returning/to I am" reads both ways and adds a great layer to the poem.
