The coming of age
went largely unnoticed
because I was busy
tending the dying,
the living,
and getting by.
Now, when I glimpse
this grayer me in the mirror,
I'm surprised -
and a little grateful (I can't lie)
that I still don't have the time
to really look.

It happens to the best of us, doesn't it?
I would add to Shay's comment, it also happens to the worst of us-- Though you are among the best.
Better not to focus on it too much. Wonderful poem. k.
Amen, Amen!!
You don't have to worry about it.
Right!
The mirror is only meant for quick hygiene checks and passing glances. Anything more is hazardous.
Lovely poem..! I guess in the end all that matters is that our life was spent doing what we love with whom we love :D
Lots of love
xoxo
Looking does not change things. Best get on with life sans mirror!
Busy tending to the living and the dying.......it does leave us a little grayer.......but you will always be beautiful, Mama Zen!
it sneaks up on us really; yet Oh vanity vanity; i still luv to look
much love...
Either that or spend money on haircolors.. getting rid of the mirrors is cheaper.

I think I may tell you this a lot but this is my favorite...such truth and it hits home with me.
I shall have to say, in all fairness to your wonderful poems, this is my favorite I've read of yours today.
if i don't look in a mirror, i'm still 18 and skinny. (ok, maybe 38, but that still feels young to me.)
Love this, MZ! Happy May!

Ah, the 'getting by' is what we're all up to, I think.
Yes yes, yes. How did that happen?
Coming of age can be a bitch, i miss you so much and yet I keep on loosing you, why does it keep on happening?
*sigh*
That's about the way it goes.
that second verse makes so much sense tome especially as a med student
Good heavens, my bones, muscles, brain, and feet are all seconding this with enthusiastic screams.
Yes, the graying arrives it seems so suddenly, but life was transforming us while we were too busy to look. I don't spend much time looking in the mirror now either.
Oh goodness yes. I'll pass by a store window, be a bit surprised to see my mother standing there, and then realize I'm looking at myself. Really wonderfully wry look at this idea.
You may have found the key to happiness.
there was a coming of age?? lol. must have missed it. btw: it's probably best to hide the scales too:) imo
You are the master of the mirror, the one the reflects all of our lives. Damn good.
yes. ~
Glad to hear from FB/SHay you are okay--stay well, MZ. K.
