She never said yes.
She never said no.
She can't remember the Friday
he didn't go home
and didn't go home
and didn't go home,
didn't go -
common law wedding.
No flowers, no dress,
just a long drawn out mess.
What's hers.
What's his.
What's theirs.
Leave the rest.
Leave the rest,
leave the rest,
leave the rest,
leave the rest,
just leave -
common law divorce.

Ah, sad, but true and no one says it better!! Hope your week is going well!!
I believe whole worlds come together and come apart every day through these very words.
Yep! Quite the exact description here.
Quite a powerful piece!
Beautifully penned :)

so effective MZ with the repetition of days, and days, and more days unfolding unbidden, unwanted. well done!
The first stanza brings Bruce Springsteen's the River to mind.. the second stanza is the likely conclusion that Bruce never wrote..
Very hard to leave--very hard to give it a rest. Well done. k.
The worst is when children are involved.
This could be a Brandy Clark song, and by that I mean it's excellent.
All too common, that's for sure.
Well spilled.
This probably happens oh so often...
I guess so. I would have liked to have tried it, as more in line with my principles — but all my husbands insisted on marriage! Probably the divorces are just as painful either way ... and the widowhood.
Truth is never ugly when you write it.
Ugh. Not your poem, but the situation it describes.
Ohhhh, a bit close to bone. I had one of those. Still feel it. Yikes
you captured the frizzy of it all
