To feel girly,
I wear pink pretties
beneath my practical pants.
To seem smarter,
I buy heavy books;
I have educated shelves.
To summon a smile,
I pretend
that I'm much more than I seem;
more
like anybody else.

Mmmmm, I can relate! Great one as always, MZ!
It's not easy being a woman...
Not havin' it, MZ. You're one of a kind.
'I'm much more than I seem'... That's the truth of it.
I guess we all try to seem like what we think others want us or expect us to be. A struggle that all deal with in some way or another....Great write Mama Zen!
So much truth that I can relate to in this.
I'm with Shay, you're one of a kind! I have educated shelves too, and eyes wearing out faster than I can read them.
This one hits too close to home.
Like it.
educated shelves - ha. I don't have a lot of romance, and I did mistakenly buy the Shade of Grey book having no idea what it was about … (truly hated it and never finished it) … I think I'm past most of the pretending - but I do know most women do get stuck in this place - I did for many years…. Very clever, MZ.
"that I'm much more than I seem"..one scoop of truth from life..
I'm with Shay on this ~
"One of the fold" is what all those "to's" bridge -- our human instinct rivets such spans into place -- "one of a kind" is what the trope ensures. The verbal sooth that burns the bridges. For better verse, at least. Amen.
The world and being a woman in it brings out a lot of posturing--too many expectations of being everything--sexy, intellectual, cheerful--enough! Thanks. k.
