is a book
of painted savages
and a view of the river.
Whispers
and the taste of a new tattoo.
It is American;
pregnant, pretty, and dead
but for the love of a woman.
It is fever and frailty;
a marriage of convenience.
It is martyrs and bankers and mid-life's God.
It's a birthright
and a diploma.
It's a bottle of Job's tears,
shaken, not stirred.

I think that shaken tears is the only answer to the universal truth of misery...
Love your last stanza here MZ--shaken --
Brilliant closing, Mama Zen!
Brilliant it is indeed -- and as always! Love the last line! Have a great weekend!
There is almost too much truth here! I'm shaken by it and have to hold on to the railing. But--for the love of the woman or of the earth or both--I'll make it home, watch mind-deadening movies over a cocktail, and forget soon enough.
Ouch...MZ I so love you. You are the queen of in your face and under the rug. I think you probably have the most healthy grasp on the human condition as anyone I've ever.....well...known online? Great job...
that last stanza leaves one shaken!
so much good stuff here in the melting pot of life.
what a great write!

Indeedy! Couldn't you just ONCE write a shitty poem? Ha! Love it, MZ. xo
Laffin hard @ Marion's comment.
I'm afraid, out of all of the wonderful responses to Corey's prompt I've read tonight, yours is closest to the truth. Sigh. I'll try to get over it. LOL. Tomorrow I'll be all Blue Skies again.
It's a bottle of Job's tears,
shaken, not stirred.
Great ending MZ! Yes it is spontaneous. Never had a chance to be provoked but poured out from the eyes. That's the truth!

Hi MZ--I admit that I do not understand everything here--but you write with a kind of conviction that makes one understand the drift if not all the particulars--to me, the shaken part as opposed to stirred, really refers to the way life jars us rather than inspires and that and so much here--the randomness of survival and what saves one in the end is very real and provocative here. k.
