Bread baked on a blooded stone
leaves you hungry and hollow.
Milk molested from the breast
cannot silk your sleep.
Red-rimmed eyes testify
the purse is insomnia's pillow.
You're monstered by the mismatch
between your wants and needs.

True and well said.
"silk your sleep...the purse is insomnia's pillow..monstered by the mismatch between your wants and your needs."
Brilliant. And so true.
Such an excellent choice of words create immense impact in your 8 lines. I think of King Lear's cry:
"Reason not the need!"
Everything in this is precise and explicit, yet retains the phosphorescent glow of mental/linguistic extras that somehow generate real poetry. Without that, phrases like "the purse is insomnia's pillow.." (!) would be merely aphorisms, if excellent ones--with it, they induce a mood, a cascading of reaction, that only poetry can instigate. Really excellent work here, MZ.
This poem is stretching me ... making me see the stretches in me ... monstered with polar wants and needs and also by thoughtless substitutions. Gosh, I need more affirmative action in my life!
Love your verb!
You have a knack for turning language to your poetic sense, and you've provided a perfect example here. The title and each line are carefully chosen and strong.
Whoa, you know how to tell it like it is so succinctly. Fantastic, MZ.
"cannot silk your sleep."… I love this expression!
Dynamic threads of alliteration add so many musical tones to this piece. The "b" sound in the first line is quite bombastic.
The end of this is a killer...it is true for so many of us.
I thought the ending lines are really strong ~ Good one MZ ~
Wow...this is raw. Bottom-line really brings this together.
You're monstered by the mismatch
between your wants and needs.
It's good that one's wants are limited by scarcity! Needs, certainly is a restraining factor. Nicely MZ!!

LOVE your writing!
♥
Maybe we should make this our new national anthem.
These are exceptionally clever words. They make one (me) do a double take, come back and read again. A real pleasure.
monstered and hungry for more is what i am...
this one kinda grosses me out, MZ. i think it's that breast line, ouch! monstrous.
MamaZen - For me, the best writing always elicits two reactions: inspiration and envy, both owing, in this case, to your prodigious talent.
I hate you/love you :) Moskowitz
You speak, with great precision, to both the personal and societal. Tight, direct and specific diction raise this to the exceptional.
I think I will never stop learning from you and being amazed by you. Your mind is so creative - always leaves me in awe.
Wonderful. K.
Wants and needs, ever mismatched, have never been so perfectly described. Yours is an awesome talent, Ms Z.
