"Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."
--- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring
When summer is such a toothless lie
the even the sunlight shivers,
and dragonflies are caught in flight
by the ice of reaching rivers,
look to the lady you left behind
with less care than you'd give a stranger.
Look to the lady of snow shrouded July;
a witch is quick to anger.

there is an air of truth in this poem... you created a great poem which echos the quote...the last stanza had great power and strength...
Terrific verses MZ ~ Beware of the witch awakening ~
I'd say by then it is a bit too late.
Hey! I know that lady!
You paint a clear picture.
.
Ha! Wonderfully clever and not so fantastical! Take care, MZ.
MZ, your poems always pack a wallop, are confoundingly succinct, in perfect brevity. I am in awe.
You had me with the first line. Love this.
Your brevity and precise use of words pack a punch every time. Great one MZ!
Dragonflies caught in "the ice of reaching rivers". What a chilling image that is!
It's simply breathtaking. I love the ice of reaching rivers, it's just like our valley here and now.

You don't piss off a Witch, have they no sense
What a wonderful opening line..definitely sets the tone of this biting piece
Yep, those Misty Mountains sure look benippled in summertime, but there's snow on them thar peaks, and a smug boy who can't see beyond his sword is liable to end up the next skull-trophy in Smaug's hoard. The way you write it so powerfully reminds me of witches I've crossed over the years, and how that curse subtly pays itself forward.
A great write. Hoping 2014 is good to you, wishing you a happy and healthy.
Loved these verses... I'm always watching out for witches...
Your gift for the perfect simile always knocks me sideways...the contrarian view of the seasons, of the weather, of the heart, is as potent as a moonlight curse coming true at full noon.
Oooh! This is superb. I love the way you set up the whole scene and time frame in stanza 1 and then hit us with the cautionary words of stanza 2. Just wonderful writing.
"dragonflies are caught in flight by the ice of reaching rivers" Love that...as always your brevity says more than many who are long winded..fabulous write!
Just finished re-reading the Hobbit, and this sounds like an Elven saying. ~
You know what they say about women, anger and scorn! She turned summer to winter! Bad choice by whoever angered her! Very cool.
Love those opening lines! They drew me right in! Great use of slant rhyme also!
Shivering sunlight ~~~ an apt description of what is happening across the USA. Beautiful poem, MZ.
lady of snow shrouded july is a magical character, especially after the gandalf reference. so good.
