the farm goes quiet.
Fox is full from his feeding.
Farmer's gone to his wife.
We got the nest feathered.
Got some scratch on the ground.
Ain't nobody here but us chickens.
There ain't nobody else around.
It's just us chickens.
We laying long and slow.
There ain't nobody here but us chickens.
We alone till that cock crow.
This was written for Margaret's prompt at Real Toads and inspired by an extremely peaceful visual poem called "Tucking in the Chickens" by Maria Wulf. How my mind got from there to here is a complete mystery to me.

Oh, how fun!! Hadn't heard that song in years!! Thanks as always for the giggles to start my day!! Have a good weekend -- aw, go ahead, have a GREAT weekend!!
This sure takes me back. My grandparents used to sing bits and pieces of this song now and then. Plus your line about scratch in the yard sounds like them.
This poem move so effortlessly the rhythm in perfect and imagery dead on for the prompt.
Never try to tame your amazing mind, Mama Zen. This was awesome!
I LOVE this!!!! You have channeled Coal Black, a little.
What a great response to the prompt!
But but but ... nothing is ominous ... all is well ... we no longer mean "us nobodies" by talking about us chickens. I like it. (No huge factory farms for me!)
...tomorrow may be a busy day, but you must have time for ONE swirl around the dance floor! Loved the video link!
The poem is so earthy - love the line "Farmer's gone to his wife".. This poem is a bit like a chicken's "Goodnight Moon".
My kind of music!!
Very visual--can't get the vid to play on this new machine everything is hinky--but I thought this sounded a bit like a child's farm song.
Wonderful sound to this. Thank you, MZ. k.
Love the characterization here,MZ!! Fits well!!
