That old rust bucket Chevy on cinder
blocks stopped running right around the recession.
I've been holding place ever since.
When a girl's without wheels,
time stops and stalls. Her gears
grind the years - like a stick shift
with a bad transmission. I'd like
to visit myself somewhere,
but walking's hard
on my knees. I content myself
with the heat mirage shimmering
off the blacktop.
When a girl's without wheels
anywhere is a good place to go.

Wow. I certainly agree with, and feel, that.
I'd love to join you in the heat mirage.
"Walking's hard on my knees" really speaks to me, too. I can see that mirage shimmering off the blacktop.
The line breaks add so much richness to an already great piece.
"Her gears grind the years - like a stick shift with a bad transmission".. sigh.. yes!
Indeed, without wheels....nowhere to go
Or anywhere is good enough !
What a brilliant piece that can be read in more ways than one.
I'd like to meet myself, too. One of my favorite movies, "Another Earth" explores what it might be like if there was another of us somewhere.

One feels the freedom as some form of blessings! Great lines MZ!

reminds me of that counting crows line - somewhere in middle america... ~
Nailed it, Zee. Your salt Okie aim is truer 'n' a country song sung loud in hard rain. So much has stayed broke since the recession.
Bingo!
