We stumble into a marriage of wind and teeth
and call it discovery,
even as we're tripping over altars
and Buddhas left behind.
We love to find.
We love to name.
We've claimed the moon,
and soon we'll claim heaven;
displacing God,
parleying with the saints,
and sending all the angels to reservations.
Repentance and reparations
are for after the smallpox.
Today, we are explorers,
and every world is new.

Oh, yes!! All too true!! Terrific as always! Have a great weekend, MZ!
That curiosity - to discover - I feel the hunger for what's new in those lines
Oh WOW!!!!!!!!! The "marriage of wind and teeth"....and "sending all the angels to reservations". Stunning writing!
Oh my, you have struck the nail on the head. With our exploring comes our insistence what we discover is ours to claim.
Bravo, woman. Tell the truth and shame the devil.
You've expressed well the very feeling I had in my gut when I read of how all the tours are booked through 2015...I couldn't help but think of all those lousy careless feet...tromping all over such a miraculous creation. Any way...you nailed this, Mama Zen and I'm so grateful you joined the challenge today! :)
I love how you have pointed out one of our flaws, without taking away from our hope (the last two lines, to me, sounded like an expression of hope).
So so true! I keep coming back to this concept of claiming, asserting, owning by proclaiming. Beautiful work, sharp and deep.
This is such valid commentary and exceptional poetry. I am continually impressed by your vision and scope.
It's all rather terrible, but very compellingly laid out here.l I think in the end the physical planets/stars are safe from us. They don't really care if we survive; as strong as we are, we'll probably take ourselves down before them, naming as we go. Well done. k.
Not only is every world new, but every word you wrote is true.
