Feast Of Fools
From cockcrow light to nightingale,
I step fetch at the Feast of Fools.
I serve both elephants and mules,
and both are dumb beyond the pale.
And, yet, this body thrives or fails
to how these dullards make the rules.
From cockcrow light to nightingale,
I step fetch at the Feast of Fools.
There's no happy end to this tale.
The new arrivals keep us full,
and the oldest can't seem to pull
themselves away. All are for sale
for the price of a coffin nail
from cockcrow light to nightingale.

dang...great rhythm, somewhat disturbing subject....the dullards make the rules, thought you might be going political there....ha....careful keeping company with fools as well...smiles.
Step Fetch - ah such an image! Excellent imagery and a mysterious dark futility pervade this. A fun read aloud.

No kidding--been saying for years we have a one party system that comes in two flavors. The refrain is perfect, and so is 'step fetch'
This so musical, and the rhyme seems effortless and totally unforced, which is the sign of a great deal of effort--which has paid off, thank you very much.

Feast of Fools. Has to be the DC Beltway crowd, seeing as the elephants and mules are getting fed. At first, I thought THEY were on the menu!! Then my activist self woke up. And then I was hoping they WERE on the menu... oy.

"step fetch" was an expression I had to look up -- coming from slavery days meaning subservient.
The phrase: "cockcrow light to nightingale"
Was fascinating.
And now I'm off to be a fool in my day, and to be paid in coffin nails.

I love this! A lot of times I don't like old expressions in poems, but you've really used them well.
