Knowing how I waste my time,
you asked me for a love poem.
I should have told you then
that though I wield a poet's pen,
deep within me
beats the heart of a mathematician.
Love is a numbers game,
a process of constant addition and subtraction
to produce a Variable A (my bullshit)
that is roughly equal to Variable B (your bullshit)
to yield the ever elusive Variable C (long term peaceful cohabitation with occasional peel the paint off the walls sex).
Or, so it seems to me.
But, that won't sell movie tickets.
So, I pick up my pen
and try again.
Years from now, my love,
when infatuation is just a memory,
I will still laugh when you tell jokes I've already heard,
remember that you don't like tomato soup,
and sleep in sweatshirts just because you like it cold.
I'll never let on that I know that you're getting a bald spot.
I will never consider that we won't always be us.
And, I will never, ever let you face this unkind world alone.
For Open Link Night at dVerse.

sigh, just really love this.
LOVE this.
sounds like a good deal to me:)
superb mama - second stanza is ace - A plus - stand out by numbers
This is between A and B, so I'll just C my way out.
Only way to love, warts n all.
Fabulous write and even better, read. MZ
I think you got the equation down perfect here. Side note for poetry: where would we be without the meters that count our our torments and ecstasies line by line? Still the metronome it tocking, counting out the I to Thou and back again ... And Love does defy all sums ... Brendan
The math and the try again both seems to add up. Look you did math without trying, that could sell movie tickets, and only occasional..geez..haha
No one says it better and it does make me wonder if maybe it could have worked -- nah, don't think so! Have a great evening, MZ!
Sylvia
i like the way your math works...this gets really sweet toward the end as well MZ
This is a brilliant capture of love and the moments in between before love returns to be seen once again.
This made me smile in every direction but sideways (whatever that means):
"Love is a numbers game,
a process of constant addition and subtraction

that is roughly equal to Variable B (your bullshit)
to yield the ever elusive Variable C (long term peaceful cohabitation with occasional peel the paint off the walls sex)."
Love this...you play the numbers and your math goes to the romantic prose of beautiful love... :)
Love this poet's write, numbers and equations all. Till the end, that is so sweet.
Enjoyed this MZ~
This is straight to the matter sweetness. And, of course I love the never letting him face the unkind world alone part the best :)
Great and true to life end!
Made me smile. Good flow. =)
sounds like a plan :)
Aww, that's a love poem all right!
so very beautiful, it all adds up
A true love poem...... That! is a love poem! Love is grand, and so are clouds and whispers and flowers and open fields and roses and violets are blue and let me count the ways and all that is fine and just dandy..... but this........ this is a love poem. Love is so much more than just the newness of it, the infatuation, the paint peeling parts, those are really just the whispers.... Love covers everything else....... incredibly touching piece, bringing me down to earth..... thank you...
Love the piece. The mathematic element is nice touch. Like how math works, and it's really a great use, as math is very formulaic, yet you seemed to play a twist on this with your "formula" which seems to play out very nicely. Thanks for the read. Happy Open Link Night, really enjoyed.
This sure is a lover poem alright and very well done thanks for sharing

I'm laughin' all the way through this and then you end it with a heart tuggin' sweet line.
Awesome!
such a cool and unusual love poem..loved it!!
"And, I will never, ever let you face this unkind world alone."
that's better than 'you had me at hello' or 'you complete me' or any love poem i've ever written.
beautiful!
d ♥
The structure is really interesting, with the math.
Math and love coexist here nicely.
Now THAT is love :)
I love this one. I really do. I think it should be MY poem. :)
This is such a nice love poem. You know your significant other still loves you when they think you're funny after 20 years.
Nice. With some real life perspective. And methinks you doth protest too much -- the final stanza is lovely, poignant and could stand alone. Thanks for this!
oh wow - I love this poem - the clinical starness of the first part then the sweet moments you drew in the second
Enjoyed this quite a bit, the filters of love presented, held up and used when the time fits the emotion, or when experience tempers our imaginations, haha.
WOW, does he know how lucky he is? This morphed from smart-ass to hot to SWEET. Who knew the romance burned so firely in you!? :)
Awesome on that paint-peeling sex!!!
xoxo
What a wonderful, spirited and tender poem. It is beautifully true on the matter of love and artistically, aesthetically true to itself... fabulous. xxxj
In spite of the mathematician's heart, you managed to create quite a romantic poem here. I love the last line--it is the sweetest.
Gayle ~
The end of the poem made me cry...The beginning of it, where you speak of your poet's pen and mathematician heart, fascinated me. I'd like to do your numerology chart someday.
