Starfish Quilt

Great-Grandma stitched
this old starfish quilt;
she never saw the sea.

Not with barns to build,
Mason jars to fill,
and children to feed.

I never knew her, but I've heard tell
she slept every night with a shell
held to her ear till she fell
into a salty dream.

I love everything about this post (poem, Grandma, artwork). And I'm suddenly longing for more of all that I've never seen.

Great minds think alike, girl. I chose the same quilt to write for. This is very sweet, it almost rocks like a wave or a cradle.

Such a soothing and comforting poem, like the shell your grandma held to her ear. This makes me long for the sea and my grandmother who was born and raised by the sea.

The grandma with a shell to her ear reminds me of when I lived inland and was ocean-starved. I collected ceramic seagulls, and bicycled out to the city dump where some scavenger seagulls lived, just to see them.

Absolutely dreamy. A great lady created dreams to look upon, to live by, to imagine on.

A lovely tribute to the women who dreamed of faraway lands, but never got to go. I really love the image of her holding a shell to her ear so she could hear the ocean.

A stunning response to a lovey design, Mama Zen!
I love the Great-Grandma and her starfish quilt - such a shame was so busy she never saw the sea. The last lines are so beautiful and poignant.

Lovely. When I was roaming far West, my mother in Florida sent me a vial of sand and another of shells, saying that people who get Florida sand in their shoes always make it back.

I would imagine that it was quite soothing to hear the sea as settled down to sleep. What amazing feelings you evoke in wonderful poem.

A sweet poem and story, like a vignette from a novel. Lovely character.
