August was a monster.
It twisted us all into strange fruit.
It cradled the worst of us to saggy man tits
and twittered nothings with two mouths.
August fattened itself on black shrouds
and the freshened bones of old corpses.
Then, it groomed itself and bloomed, whorish,
into a full, fetid swell of shame.
August was a monster
in an America
made great again.

What a powerful poem. But I am glad that America's greatness is not placed upon one person but among us many people who are making America great again. I look at the devastation of Harvey and am amazed by the those who risk their lives to rescue to give places of safety. America at its best. I have family in the Houston area who are safe and sound. They are up on higher ground and so were not flooded. They have opened their home to neighbors, their pets, their newborn baby..Feeding offering a place on the floor to sleep, their washer and dryer...We are the people making America great I am proud to say. Not all of the darkness is placed upon one man but I am grateful to say, light is among us many.
Ka-pow! this poem packs a wallop and I love it. I also love what Toni says about the people of America being the ones who make it great.
What a poem, as usual. The "strange fruit" inclusion--perfect.
Incredible write!!!
much love...
The power of your words brings to life this August monster.
Love it, Mom Zee. At one point I was reminded of a much forgotten pre-election rebuttal made towards Climate Change, "there is no drought in California."
..
I have hope that greatness can be found elsewhere than from gilded rooms, I know it,
I love your straight-talking irony in the guise of monsters and strange fruit! I found these lines particularly powerful:
'August fattened itself on black shrouds
and the freshened bones of old corpses'
and
'August was a monster
in an America
made great again'.
My goodness this is powerful! Especially; "August fattened itself on black shrouds and the freshened bones of old corpses."
It's good to read you again, Mama Zen. A powerful poem. As an American, I'm with Toni. The good of our country is so much forgotten, the people are caste with the psychopaths in DC....but we stand as a population who are some of the most generous and charitable in the world. Harvey is just one example (except for the looters who will always take advantage of chaos to create their own opportunities) of the greatness of our peoples.
Your words are incisive.
I broke out in gooseflesh as i read this poem, MZ. The sense of something sinister was very keenly felt. August was a bad, bad month - season's change, madness and maelstrom aplenty.
Incisive and potent.
Perfect. And this Grendel's ma is September.
