I was a baby,
a rock-a-bye baby;
I wanted the cradle to fall
out of the leaves
and into the weed I smoked
to make sense of it all.
Nickel night rock star
celebrity skin
got harder and harder to shed
till all I could croon
was that old off-key tune
"Jail, Institution, or Dead."

Ah, all too true, I'm afraid and no one says/writes it better!! Wishing you the best of years, MZ, and hopefully with lots more laughs and much less tears!!
Rocking on the delicious progression, I see.
I really like how you can tell a complete tale in such few words.
Ha. This is awesome.
The rhythm in this works so well with the quiet rage and desperation
And I'm just humming along to Courtney's song...
I love the sense of continuity you have achieved in the way each stanza hooks onto the next. The song like form, is perfect to recall the rock band days of your youth.
Oh dear--terrible to be an old rocker or off one's. Thanks, MZ> k.
Not you, babe. Let somebody else take that endless bath in Paris. Besides, he said if he had it to do over again, he'd forget about being a rock star, and be a poet instead.
In just 55 words you can really pack a whallop...
This made me think of the Hank Williams tune: "I'm a rolling stone/alone and lost./ For a life of sin/I've paid the cost./When I pass by, all the people say/Just another boy/on the lost highway...' Sorry for quoting the whole verse, but it's that kind of song. Agree with Fireblossom, being a poet is a much better choice. Thanks for the echo of the past, so real, and for getting me to listen to this this morning

The pain of that perfect hindsight. That crisp knowing and regret of many of the choices we make! Very intense work!
"You know that I would be a liar If I was to say to you 'Girl, we couldn't get much higher' Come on baby, light my fire"
Joplin and Morrison, among the others were my heroes. They still are. A 1960's month I spent in San Fransisco was better than Heaven back then.
..
I must completely agree with Jim! Love this concise saga.
One can muster oneself to a higher level given the needs to do so!

As a fellow walker in times of weed and song, your poem brought back quite a few memories .. who would have thought then it'd end like this a great granny singing lullabies :-)
I'm too mundane for any of the three... ~
Hah! "I'm not crazy, institutionalized!" Love it.
Happy New Year!!
So sharp, it's almost like you write with a razor, from the title to the last line. Kudos.
Ah...rock star life isn't what its cracked up to be. I wish I could fall into some weed. I don't think I could smoke enough to make sense of the world around me though.
