There was no crying room
at the Countyline
Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Just the red carpet halls
and Sunday school classrooms
back behind the choir.
Just grannies patting
bottoms and rocking
in time with Amazing Grace.
Just a feeling of safe;
seeds of faith
in the heart of a child.

I hadn't though of crying rooms in years. You have a mastery of these kinds of moments (I assume) from your past; these poems never fail.
Just a feeling of safe;
seeds of faith
in the heart of a child.
You captured so eloquently what faith can grow into and build.
done well
good!
We didn't have a nursery in my childhood church either. I think that's best.
Thanks for the memory.
oh thats nicely presented, changes changes changes
have a good Sunday
much love...
What a masterful look back at those times....there was crying room at our small church. Parents walked out into the hallway to soothe there child or have a few words...but crying never seemed to linger, or so it seemed.
I had never heard of crying rooms... my growing up was a little be too secular... I cried at home instead... but maybe it's a good idea to build one.
The perfect words and great memories for the day although when I was "nursery" young no one had heard of crying rooms, but parents were pretty quick to pop a hand over a bawling kids mouth!! Hope you have a great day, MZ!!
This poem really touched me to the core!!
So much emotion in this small space of poem....you have such a knack for that!
So very touching, and so true! Thank goodness for those seeds of faith.
You made me feel as if I was there, with the women rocking and patting bottoms.....the feeling of safety....of goodness.....
Our little Assembly of God church had a crying room behind the sanctuary. It had an old stereo speaker and a curtained glass window. I walked many a mile there breastfeeding my youngest. Oh, the memories! The grannies and grandpas there were holy, holy, selfless Godly people and the Spirit of God was palpable... I was dirt poor financially, but spiritually, I was rich beyond measure.
Great write, MZ. xo
Sounds lovely!

One has to have more faith in a child these days as they are getting smarter

I've never heard of a crying room before. What a great idea! But to feel safe enough to develop faith is an even better one.
A tender evocation beautifully rendered.
yes, faith keeps one safe..
Perhaps when you feel safe there need not be a crying room - not that there are no tears but maybe no one should cry alone..i love the sense of place and feeling preserved int his poem..i could picture it clearly
I've never been in a church that had a crying room. Or perhaps there was one, but I didn't know about it.
What was I missing out on?
so touching and loving picture of Amazing Grace and when faith is planted in a child...
Very pretty poetry--thanks, MZ. k.
