We swam the humidity to the moon.
Left Earth behind, all doomed and blue.
Set up shop
for astronauts,
but I've only seen
two or three.
Now every what-might-be late afternoon,
you quote The Waste Land (like you do),
and I pretend to understand it (like I do).
Here, even Eliot
lacks gravity.

Ooooh, The Waste Land!! It was a mystery to me until I hit a certain age, then BOOM: illumination! I was sitting in a doctor's office last week reading Eliot. Great poem, MZ. xo
I love your opening. And the underlying reference to Elliot from E.T. Elliot lacks gravity and is floating away into outer space, figuratively speaking, even though he's not even the extra-terrestrial. But the one you're with might rep. E.T. --- someone strange, unique. This might be a college experience, where you've only been with two or three people so far. Your heart and body are still young in their experiences. They aren't destroyed by brokenness yet.
Brilliant hyphenation here: "Now every what-might-be"
Excellent use of parentheticals. (Your first parenthesis is italicized and should not be, though.)
In your title, I also see a hidden "grave ... ity). Feelings of death, suffering, loss. If not yet, soon to come.
Basically, I think this is about sex and swooning, that floating-head sensation that comes with being "in love." Feeling like you can't quite grab onto anything that will keep you grounded. Makes me think of the bubble room in Willy Wonky. The fizzy lifting drink.
Love your poetry !!
I wish I could have conceived this poem! I think it is simply outstanding.
Just terrific. k.
O dear , a little edgy this one. Nice write
Much love...
I do like your way with words.
This is incredible :D great work :D
I love "left earth behind all doomed and blue".
I've never read Eliot, but I'm sure I'd be clueless if I did.
(Don't all women pretend sometimes? ;)
I think you may be the love child of Edna St. Vincent Millay and Richard Brautigan.
Yep, I think Fireblossom said it all!! The love child you are indeed!!
Love the wit!
your poem is powerful - really dug the feel of the humidity to set the tone
Wittingly done that I love reading. Thanks MZ!
Hank
Yeah, love this! When gravity lacks let's stop pretending we get everything that we don't. Off we go!
It made me go look up the poem. I think I would have to pretend to understand it, also. I love the ending.
all doomed and blue... yeah... ~
