On the tip
of my intemperate tongue
is a tasteless joke
tickling
inappropriate giggles
from the guts of grief.
Snickers and snorts
of every sort
crash against the cracks
of my crumbling composure.
Finally, I let it loose -
the gallows guffaw
of a hanged man
struggling for balance
at the end of a fraying rope.

Gallows humor runs deep in my family, in my veins, and I have to tell you, this cracked me up. Should I confess that a long-running thing about my dad's slovenliness came up at his funeral? The pastor said, "In my Father's house there are many rooms..." and I whispered to my sisters, "He probably won't clean that one either," and we all cracked up, but our heads were down so everyone thought we were crying. Then they patted us on the back trying to comfort us and we were laughing about THAT. I think Dad would have loved that, actually!! Peace, Amy

I know that tension, though I must admit that grief has not always been part of it. This is so interesting and well done in the way you have brought the tension and its underlying psychology to light. Powerfully done, tension-filled and the balance tipped.
Dark humor is delicious.
