When I left you,
I left you
the tattoo on my left arm
that I let you give me
that 4th of July.
I left you the heart
with the butterfly wings,
but I kept the red rose
that climbs
up my thigh.

Love this... though I never had a tattoo, I can understand how it would feel like a brand when it's over.
Whew, mama. This is sexy! I love your fire that will not die --- even if you have to cut off your arms, cut out your heart, toss 'em over your head as you walk away ... Gotta keep those getaway thighs.
So sad, leaving the heart with butterfly wings. Love the red rose climbing up the thigh.........
When it's over, you leave with what you have... red rose climbing up the thigh:nice
I loved this, I've had so many friends make similar choices... one of the reasons I never got a tattoo.
Strong spirit in evidence here - Good for you and you have your usual creative punch Mama Zen!
Nothing worse than a daily reminder of a lover long gone! They should make erasable tattoos! Well written.
How much sadder when love is lost, and then to be reminded daily by a tattoo...I like Bev's idea of erasable tattoos.....wonderful poem!
This is incredibly sweet and sensuous!
I never had or wanted a tattoo but can imagine what a bummer it would be to have an unwanted one like that. One with deep memories for a deep wound I guess.
Ah, I always wondered about those tattoos people have which name former loves!
Yes indeed, when it ends we give back some things, cling secretly to others. So beautifully evocative! And you have made succinct an art form.
MZ--That image of the rose... what a way to end the poem.
Those are beautiful tattoos you've mentioned. I love the images your poem brings to my mind. Well done!
Reminders of what was; especially the rose.
Aw c'mon let me see :)
Another very clear picture.
