How I wish that I had known you better.
How I wish that you had known me at all.
Coupled in school by a surname letter,
we had side by side desks each fall.
I'll bet you don't even remember me
or my knack
for invisibility.
How I wish that I had known you better
and let you know me.
I had a small crush on your brother
and an even bigger crush on you.
I was the latch key kid of a single mother
always mismatched compared to your cool
natural ability
to be who everyone
wanted to be
I wish that I had known you better
and let you know me.

I do think we go to school so many times with so many invisible kids... still happens, and amazing how we are latched together for a while in alphabetic order.
Ah that wistfulness of having a mad crush on someone! Reminds me so well of those days not-so-long-ago, when I was a school kid too.
Those unforgettable school crushes and forgotten classmates...sigh!
I can feel the pain so strongly here.. try as we much, sometimes people just don't understand us. Big hugs!
Oh would that there were do-overs! Wouldn't it be wonderful to be born with the confidence that comes only with age? Nice thought!
Oh, I still remember the boy I was alphabetically 'matched' with for years on end in middle school. Haven't thought of him in years until reading this. Thanks for the nostalgic walk down memory lane :-)
Oh so absolutely poignantly beautiful
This made me smile, I had a locker next to the same guy throughout high school. At a reunion he confessed he had a crush on me in high school. Who would've knew...
Ah - a well penned poem about a regret.
dang. I was invisible, too.. ~
This gave me goosebumps, probably because I related to it so. I always envied the people with last names with A...or B and those that got A's and B's easily.
This is awesome, Kelli. I especially love the part about sharing a letter, and about having a bigger crush on this kid as opposed to the brother.
This speaks of so many missed opportunities we have in life...
Those alphabetical seating charts and adolescent silence! Many wishes long since.
Gosh, school was so difficult altogether, full of awkwardness and self-doubt. This poem puts me right back there.
Poetry at one length of its power is an amends, both to the world and to our history. Who else is gonna go back and sit in that adjacent desk and tell us what we so missed that bid us instead to write poems?
Luckily all my crushes knew and either responded or laughed and I wasn't hurt as it was part of the game...however one girl did cry when I gave her up. Bad me!
Hey, I didn't know that was you. I had a secret crush on you too, but I had my own invisibility problems, what with being fat and Mexican and all.
I read this the day you posted it, and loved it, and I love it upon second reading as well.
