The birds at Lullaby Creek have blunted beaks
from pecking the eyes of dolls
dumped as trash in the south side ditch
just where the land drops off.
Their nests are strands of flaxen hair
woven with lavender lace
and lined with strips of plastic pulled
from Sippy Susie's smiling face.
By day the creek is silent -
not a single bird finds a song.
But when it gets dark on the Lullaby,
birds cry Mama all night long.

Gosh! This is freaking amazing. You never miss a beat, and I felt so THERE in the place you created.
Oh shut up. You're like some basketball player who sits all game and then comes in in the final minute and sinks three three-pointers. This poem is so good i want to hit you with it, lol.
Truly, an amazing poem, Mama Zen. So this explains, where all of the Sippy Suzy dolls disappeared to.
I love this birdy poem with the "blunted beaks" and eyes pecked out of dolls. Very cool........love Shay's comment, too. LOL.
Amazing... a landfill of dolls come alive in the night.
I probably shouldn't be grinning as widely as I am right know. Then again, it's me, so grinning at the delicious spookiness of this poem is just perfect.
"...and lined with strips of plastic pulled
from Sippy Susie's smiling face."
What an image!
"Their nests are strands of flaxen hair woven with lavender lace"
I love that ... and the last stanza.
Wow, this poem is spooky! I have a doll phobia - can't stand the things - but I do get a thrill out of the fear.
Touching, Mom Z. Those poor birds pecking those plastic eyes. Who'd of thunk except maybe you.

i've been absent of late, and pens like this make me wonder why. damn fine pen ~
This is deliciously macabre in a lightly entertaining way. What a spin on dolls and birds.
I'm enthralled by the fully developed eerie world you've created in this poem. It's pretty darn near perfect.
Oh I love this! Dolls are so creepy!
Yes to what everyone else said. Also I adore the name you gave the place - at once perfect, and perfectly incongruous.
This piece is like a song and reads like lyrics! Love it!
What a land you have created here! Creepy dolls coming alive at night. Love it!
That one is sticky! Really, really good. I just read the book, "Behind the Beautiful Forevers" and there was a line about yellow flowers resembling the open beaks of baby birds. That stuck with me too.
