When your days are more flies
than butter,
you must be quick with the click
and the shutter.
But when I saw that monarch flutter,
I forgot to focus at all.
For once I let go
of the urge
to capture; I just observed her.
A fleeting thousand word moment -
mine, then gone.

Your first lines made me smile a wide smile... I love what you did here, with the words, and also in telling us to let them go.
WOW!!!!!! Days "more flies than butter" is brilliant. As is the observing, that "thousand word moment, mine, then gone." That is the secret, to observe in wonder, and not need to capture. I love how you get to the heart of things with so few strong and perfect lines. This is just wonderful, to read and contemplate.
a great lesson in photography here and an imaginative slant on days of wine and roses. Love the tempo of this poem too
I couldn't help but smile at this. Sometimes it takes a lot more willpower to let go and be still so you can truly be in the moment than to try to capture it somehow.
There is always too little butter... But let the flies be shutterbugs
There's something to be said for being in the moment.
A wonderful charm here--and easy to relate to. k.
Yes--If we're so busy capturing the moment, you're not IN the moment. Bravo!
The butterfly is an elsuive creature of beauty. A grand subject for a symbolic reflection.
How did Blake put it - "he who catches a joy as it flies / lives in Eternity's sunrise" or something. That "fleeting thousand word moment" better said in 55. Amen.
Oh I love this...I love taking photos, but butterfly moments are better captured without a lens.
Such a lovely poem, and so happy that I could have the moment again in print. k.
Loving it, Mom Z. It took a bad camera shot to take us back to the days of childhood enjoyment. Sit and watch, dream, until the butterfly flies.
It's what I should do instead of trying to get pictures of the rabbit and his family that live in our back yard.
Sorry, I was being naughty with my earlier comment, being satirical. I don't hunt.
