If I pull me from the poem,
will the words stand on their own?
Will the heart still beat?
The blood flow free?
Or, must the flesh hang on my bones?

I swear, if you get chucklehead comments on this one, I'm gonna hurt somebody.
nope, you have to own the words, otherwise they just lay on the page...and dont move much...
I think it is impossible to extricate the poet from his/her words!
I love that you would even have the insight to ask these questions. That in itself is poetic. Perfect title, and I especially like the last line---if you rip a poem from the person (its core, heart, essence), you are left with a bloody, dead mess (like flesh torn from bones). Excellent, MZ.
I think it is key that you said "If I pull me from the poem" rather than the general "If you pull me from the poem." No one would want to remove you from the poem more than you---it's scary to see yourself in print. It would be nice to write from a distant place, and in no way be embedded in the words.
The words are like our bones. I don't think they can be separated.
sorry, they're your burden. but you already know that.
ha - that's the ultimate test...right..? smiles
our purest selves delight in the poetry of each others lives, but the beautiful flesh provides the adrenaline needed to rapture ourselves to that heaven.
Your words do, MamaZ. You write a tight prose that can stand still in a strong wind.
i think each word contains a little piece of us from the moment we first call them to mind. and i love your words!
♥
I think our words are our heartbeats ~
Wishing you and your family a Blessed Christmas ~
Fantastic Koan !
Let me try, let me try :-)
If there is no self (which I prefer to call "many selves"), then the poem is, in ways not write by you and you are already pulled from the poem. Will the heart still beat? Indeed, because their is no you behind the beat. Will the blood flow free? Indeed.
But Flesh must hang on bones -- it is our condition.
How did I do?
What a good question--can the poets be separate? I am not sure they can--thought provoking write!
Terrific. k.
Terrific. k.
I love your musings.
The words are all the me there will be, I think, but it will always be. Like Edgar and Emily, and stuff. They're in the words, and they are the words, even if they've been pulled away.
You are your words ... your words are you. It is just that when you are not speaking them one does not remember this. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Powerfully put. Mama Zen. Your writing grows deeper - and soars higher - than ever these days. That last line is especially brilliant.
It's beautiful how you made your own words, MZ! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
